NEWS - DM and FUMO testing with setcom Multi-Media test platform
May, 2009 - after successful release of the OMA DM 1.0 test cases in 2007, setcom wireless is moving forward to introduce FUMO testing as an upgrade for the already existing DM test cases available for the setcom Multi-Media test platform S-CAT 6020.
Currently there are 48 OMA DM version 1.2 test cases and 16 newly released FUMO 1.0 test cases available. All the DM test cases are adopted by both GCF and PTCRB as part of the application conformance test criteria. The 16 FUMO tests are focussing more on firmware update procedure interoperability testing and are therefore an important part of testing prior to network acceptance by operators.
It is also highly probable that some operators will come up with further test scenarios to ensure robustness of DM/FUMO implementation hence securing trouble free end user experience and reducing expensive call back actions for firmware updates. Today's mobile devices are getting so complex that the demand of remote management services related parameters and firmware updates to fix existing bugs is obvious. Hence DM and FUMO will become more important requirements in the short term.
What is FUMO in relation to DM?
FUMO (Firmware Update Management Object) is an OMA standardisation for updating the firmware of the mobile clients over the air. FUMO uses DM protocol for this purpose, so it is most likely that a UE supporting FUMO has full DM implementation as a standard. DM is a protocol that allows remote access (read and write) to certain parameters and settings of the phone so that the operator can remotely manage the UE(s).
Typical example of the usage is to re-program MMS settings of the phone (using DM) in case operator has decided to change those settings at infrastructure level. FUMO can also be used to download new firmware with mobiles which have known problems where the subscriber finds it to complex to manage those settings.
